About AgarChoice

Connecting the agarwood journey.

AgarChoice is a Malaysian agarwood manufacturer and supplier. Its work connects cultivation, processing and product development.

Its collection includes agarwood chips, powder, incense sticks and oil. Behind these forms is the company’s work to connect tree resources, technical knowledge and routes to market.

Understanding agarwood

What is agarwood or Oud?

Agarwood, also known as Oud, is fragrant, resin-rich wood that can develop within certain agarwood-producing trees. It forms in affected parts of the wood, rather than throughout every tree.

  1. The Aquilaria tree

Aquilaria grows across tropical Southeast Asia, including Malaysia.

  2. Wounding or stress

Wounding, infection or other stress can trigger a response in the affected wood.

  3. Resin response

The tree can produce aromatic resin around the affected area.

  4. Resin-rich wood

As resin accumulates, parts of the wood become darker, denser and fragrant.

  5. Agarwood

This fragrant, resin-rich wood is agarwood, valued for its aroma.

Agarwood material can be processed into different forms, including chips, powder, oil and incense. Each follows its own production steps.

Why it is valued

Time · Scarcity · Craft

Resin-rich wood forms slowly and only in parts of a tree. Its limited occurrence, distinctive fragrance and the skilled work of selecting and processing it all contribute to agarwood’s value. Strong demand and overharvesting have also placed pressure on wild trees.

The AgarChoice approach

Cultivating a path to agarwood.

The challenge

Naturally occurring agarwood is scarce and can take years to form. Cultivation and inoculation methods have developed to encourage resin formation, though approaches vary in time, cost and consistency.

Inoculation is a controlled technique used with cultivated trees to encourage the response associated with resin formation.

AgarChoice’s focus

AgarChoice has focused its research and cultivation work on inoculation for agarwood-chip production. Its presentation describes years of research, particularly in Taiwan, behind this approach.

That chip focus connects its tree resources with later processing and product development.
